Top 3 Ways To Track Your Workout

Top 3 Ways To Track Your Workout

Top 3 Ways To Track Your Workout – I have a friend who has stacks upon stacks of old spiral notebooks she has used over the years to track her workouts. She has logged everything from reps to daily food intake, and how she felt a particular workout went that day – good, bad, or indifferent. Even though most of those journals are several years old and have zero empty pages left, she hangs on to them as a reminder of how far she has come.

There are countless ways to track workouts. Many fitness buffs, like my friend, still puts pen to paper in a journal. But technology has evolved with easy to use high-tech apps and fitness gadgets.

Really, it’s whatever works best for you. But bottom line, you should ALWAYS track your workouts. How can you measure results if you don’t track it is what I always say.

Keeping track of your workouts allows you to know exactly where you’ve been so you can plot the course on where you want to be in your health and fitness journey. Maybe you were only able to eke out six burpees one week, but two weeks later you got up to 15 reps without resting. Or maybe you ran a 5k two minutes faster than what you were able to do just a month earlier. Write that down! Track it!

Progress is a motivator to push yourself harder than you’ve ever imagined. And it’s fairly quick and easy. Or, put your money where your mouth is to track your workout. Sometimes the smallest investment in something like an app, a fitness program or a meal plan will actually hold you accountable and make you track your progress. If you have a place where you are recording what you eat or what activities you do every day, you’ll have a constant reminder of your fitness goals. Setting a goal and sticking to it is attainable with digital reminders and notifications.

Some other benefits of tracking your workouts include:

  1. Setting clear goals and expectations for yourself.
  2. Ability to plan workouts in advance.
  3. Ability to set meal plans, track your calories and weight loss.
  4. Track setbacks.
  5. Track rep ranges and weight used.

You can’t possibly remember from week to week or day to day which exercises you did, how many reps you knocked out, and whether or not the workout was challenging enough. So the idea is to set up your routine in advance, track it as you move through the workout or immediately after, and refer back.

And like I said, there are many ways to do that. Here are just a few ways to track your workout:

  • Workout Journal – Trust me, there is nothing wrong with going old school like my friend, buy a simple spiral notebook from Target, and start tracking right now. It’s great for home exercisers or gym rats because it’s compact, but you don’t even have to do that. Most of us have our phones nearby, so use the calendar in your smartphone to accomplish the same thing.
  • Phone Applications – I promise if you go to the App Store or Google Play, you will find a ridiculous number of fitness apps designed to track your progress or act as an online coach. There are even apps that remind you when to drink water, check your heart rate and count calories. Tracking your workout is supposed to be efficient and low maintenance. All of these apps accomplish that and more. Some of the best free apps out there are Nike Run, Endomondo, FitNotes-Gym Workout Log, and Jetfit Workout.
  • FitBit – Fitbit is a wireless activity tracker that promises to track every part of your day, even when you are simply walking around the mall. There are various types, but most monitor steps taken, exercise, food, calories burned and individual sleep patterns. The data can be synched to your computer or phone, so you can stay on top of your fitness goals.

Personally, I am a pen to paper kind of gal. When I start a new workout program, (I do ALL beachbody programs and am currently doing 22 Min Hard Corps) I like to pin up the calendar that comes with the program to my bathroom mirror. Each day I complete the workout, I literally put an “X” on that day! I see & feel success with each “X.”

What are some of the ways you track your workouts? Are you still old school, or have you gone completely high tech in your approach. I would love to hear about them, comment below.

Benefits of Family Workouts

Benefits of Family Workouts

Benefits of Family Workouts – I have to brag for a quick second by saying that my husband and I make it a point to go on a date every day. That’s right! Every morning when the alarm goes off, we get up, throw our gear on, grab a healthy shake, stretch, and get a family workout in together in our living room. The benefits of a family workouts go much deeper than physic, we are teaching our family the importance of living a healthy life.

It’s not your typical get-all-gussied-up, leave-your-kids-at-home date night on the town – don’t worry, we find opportunities here and there to do that too – but being diligent about working out in the morning together is a great way to start off the day before heading to work. And like our marriage, this “date workout” keeps us both working toward the same goal!

We are a team in every way possible – including leading a healthy and fit lifestyle.

They say families who sweat together, stay together. I’m a firm believer in that. I’ve said in previous blogs that even a few of our kids are occasional early risers like Brett and I, so rather than shoo them away, we welcome the chance to include them in our workout because there are so many Benefits of Family Workouts. As you can see from some of the pictures and quick workout videos on my website, even our dog Jojo gets into the action.IMG_0729

Before we know it, we’re done and we can start getting ready for school, work or whatever else is going on.

The benefits of family workouts and staying active together are endless. If you have a partner, there is no snooze button on that alarm clock, now is there?! Also, meal prep is easier, it brings the family together, it’s fun, and it also teaches kids the importance of staying active in an age where youth obesity rates are climbing and that Playstation 4 or Nintendo Wii seem more important in their daily lives.

It’s paramount as parents – and couples – that we set the right example for each other and/or our children when it comes to living a healthy and fit lifestyle. Trust me, I can keep going on and on with the benefits, but here are just THREE more reasons why sweating together is the ONLY way to go.

It’s a way to make unforgettable memories …

Too often, families get caught up in a cycle of school and work. Brett has been known to work some pretty demanding hours, and with me also being a business owner and having to drive the kids to and from school, life can feel like one giant hamster wheel. Working out in the morning is a great way to spend time together before the craziness of the day gets to be too much. Plus, you can create some AMAZING MEMORIES.  Just a few Benefits of Family Workouts; Imagine doing push ups with your little one sitting on your back giggling away! Imagine you and your spouse trying to do a new workout routine … and instead of getting frustrated, you laugh and push each other along! Brett and I want our kids to look back on their childhood as a time of togetherness, a time where they remember all the reasons why they love being a part of this family. And for Brett and I, we want to foster those memories.

IMG_5185

Your kids see the importance of being active …

Like anything else, if a child sees his/her parent doing something consistent – like working out and taking care of themselves – that child will want to emulate that action. According to the Huffington Post, youth obesity rates have increased over the last 14-15 years. Most of that is likely because of today’s technology world. Kids have access to Iphones, Ipads, video games and television – all sedentary hobbies. And when the aren’t doing that, they are sitting in a classroom for most of the day with only fleeting moments for recess depending on their age. If the parents are the EXACT SAME way, how do you think the kids will react? Replace “lounging time” with active time, prepare healthy meals, and use dinner time as a chance to answer questions your kids may have about health and fitness. Trust me, your family will reap the benefits.

No more working out alone …

Do I really need to explain this one? I mean, who prefers to workout by themselves? You see it all the time though when the mom is some world-class triathlete while the dad and the kids are overweight. Even the most fit of triathletes wants someone out there to encourage them, push them on a day where they may not be “feeling it” and understand why they do what they do. So flip the script! Statistics show that Benefits of Family Workouts and staying active together is a great way to reach goals quicker. Even if your spouse has the same fitness level and you are starting from scratch, or one of you is a little further along … it still creates a benefit to everyone involved.  Couples workouts are great, but getting the kiddos involved and active is priceless!

Bottom line, I love hearing stories from couples who have committed themselves to a more healthy lifestyle – TOGETHER. When they share that knowledge with their children through teachable moments, it’s icing on the cake. With all that being said, why wouldn’t you make it a family affair! Go enjoy the benefits of Family Workouts today!

Visualize Success with a Vision Board

Visualize Success with a Vision Board

2016 vision boad & goalsIt may sound silly, but seeing your goals and dreams in front of you every single day works!  Create your dreams and Visualize Success with a Vision Board.  Weather you have health & fitness goals, weight loss goals, save more money, spend more time with your family or take that dream vacation, it’s important to dream agin!  Remember when we were kids and you dreamed big?  Then life happened and we seemed to get bogged down with the normal hustle and bustle of day to day activities.  Well I challenge you to think outside the box and dream again!

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” — Maria Robinson

If you truly want to achieve success, you have to map it out and make a plan.  Next, have self discipline.  Finally, spend time visualizing your vision & goals.  All three will help you achieve success.

But first, let’s have some fun Visualizing Success with a Vision Board. Here are some tips to creating your vision board.

  1. Have fun with it!  Get as creative as you want or keep it as basic as you want.  My first ear I printed off images I googled then pinned them to my cork board.  It was great to look at my dreams in front of me each day.  Creating a vision board is a perfect excuse for girls night in!  This year I went digital.  Lots of websites to help or just save images and arrange on a board.  I used www.picmonkey.com to finalize my vision board above.  I LOVE my 2016 board!  (although I may add things to it throughout the year.)
  2. Know what you want.  Don’t just choose things other people put on their board.  Think about all areas of your life and how you want to either improve, strive to achieve or kill it with success, fame & riches.  Focus on areas such as love & romance, wealth & prosperity, career, health & wellness, mind & soul, family, travel and hobbies.
  3. Focus & Visualize.  Take time each day to mentally put yourself in your vision board.  Visualize success and the feeling you will feel after you lose the weight, relaxing on the beach with your family on that family vacation, the pure joy and relief you feel after you pay off ALL the debt.  It takes practice, but visualizing your dreams and focus on how you will feel after you achieve them is a key to success.
  4. Be inspired!  Let your new vision board inspire you, lead you and direct you to work hard for your new goals.
  5. Visualize Success with your new Vision Board and it will point you in the right direction, and help keep your positive Mojo.  When I fall off track, I look to my vision board, spend some time visualizing and it’s an instant positive pick me up.

Here are some example, but there are millions.  I used a fun website to help create a digital vision board  this yea.  Mine is the cork board at the top.  Exciting things to come!  http://www.dreamitalive.com/

Pre-holiday goal setting – sign up for a 5K

Pre-holiday goal setting – sign up for a 5K

Pre-holiday goal setting – sign up for a 5K – I’ve been inspired! I am going to sign me and the family up for a 5K run this holiday season. Heck, I may do two or three of these short 3-mile races while I’m at it. OK, so maybe I won’t go that far. But I will do it.

This is a big step for me because I’m simply not a fan of running. I never have been, and in fact, this will be my first 5K experience. But wait Karma, aren’t you a health and fitness coach? Shouldn’t you live for this sort of stuff? Yes, but there are many ways to ‘skin a cat’ when trying to achieve your fitness goals.

My goals, which have been outlined often in my blogs, never included running long distance. Ewwww.

But I’ve softened on that as of late. Having an event on the horizon — such as a 5K — is a great goal because it provides a temporary deadline and intensified focus to your training. For example, knowing a big race is coming up can force you to run outside when the weather isn’t so great. Or better yet, energize you on those early mornings when you might ordinarily hit the snooze button a few times on the alarm clock.

Like all exercise, running regularly can improve your cardiovascular functions, reduce body fat and give you numerous mental health benefits. With a healthy diet added in, look out! During this time of year, they are particularly helpful when trying to avoid — or offset — the annual Thanksgiving turkey coma!

So what is a 5K? In short, it’s a long-distance road run … but one that only goes 3.1069 miles. Trust me, I looked it up. That distance alone — it’s not like we are training for an ultra marathon here, people — makes it one of the shortest and most common road running distances for novice or infrequent runners.

They look fun for the entire family, and competitive enough to give you an incredible high when you cross that finish line. And they are everywhere!

A quick search on http://www.dfwraces.com shows there are an eye-popping 12 races on Thanksgiving Day alone within 50 miles of Dallas. Some, like the 7th Annual Grub Run, are in Fort Worth, but others are right here in our backyard. Those races include the Double Oak Turkey Trot 5K & 1M Fun Run and morning Turkey Trots in Castle Hills and Denton.

Of course, the big one is the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot at Dallas City Hall Plaza. From Black Friday through the end of the year, there are 59 more races in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. If you are outside of the DFW area, do a quick google search and find a list of 5K’s near you!

If I’ve peaked your interest, please don’t feel overwhelmed. Think of a 5K as an entry point on your journey to a healthy lifestyle. You don’t have to set yourself up for failure by setting unrealistic goals, either. Just run to have fun.

Crossing that finish line will give you a renewed faith in yourself that you can accomplish anything. Pre-holiday goal setting – sign up for a 5K

Listening to music for a better workout, improved lifestyle

Listening to music for a better workout, improved lifestyle

A friend and I were sitting at my kitchen table recently, just shooting the breeze as they say, when we began talking about different types of music and which ones are absolute must-haves for our playlists. Both of us are health fanatics so naturally the conversation centered on songs that pump you up, put you in the zone, increase energy for that one extra rep or mile, and make you feel unstoppable during a workout.

Maybe a little ‘Eye of the Tiger’, or some AC/DC?

I’m sure you’ve all been there, right?!?!?!?!? You’re probably thinking the playlist you’ve created is the bomb.com, and you’d likely feel lost without it. Music is a good kind of distraction. I mean, I can’t think of a workout I’ve had where I didn’t have something playing on my headphones or in the background.

Having nothing there seems … well, weird!

So my friend — who happens to be a guy — is rattling off these high-energy songs, bands and music apps like Pandora and iHeart Radio when I completely throw him for a loop and suggest Brain Shift Radio. He had no clue what that was, but trust me when I say it’s fantastic!

I don’t want to turn this blog into an infomercial, but here’s the skinny. BSR is interactive, prescriptive internet radio created by the Strong Institute (no relation to being strong in the gym … sorry, corny joke) and is based on core musical elements effective in helping improve focus, reduce anxiety, fall asleep fast, raise energy and enhance cognitive abilities.

I’ve mentioned in previous blogs that I’ve suffered from anxiety and depression in the past. My son, Pierce, has dyslexia, so I turned to BSR for ways to help him. We’d put on some low music in the background while Pierce was working on a project, and we saw immediate benefits.

It was then I realized, “Hey, I need that too.” I think I shocked my friend even more when I told him I prefer to listen to personal development stuff on BSR from the likes of John C Maxwell, Chalene Johnson and Joel Osteen — while I’m working out at home or taking our lovable dog, Jojo, for a walk.

To each his/her own, right?

And that’s part of the point I’m trying to make here. Jamming out to your favorite tunes during a workout is great. And trust me, I will preach that all day long. But being an online health and fitness coach also means paying attention to the much larger spectrum of health, and opening clients’ eyes to the fact that there are natural ways to achieve a better YOU.

Music is one of those remedies.

Beyond snatching up your favorite earbuds, pumping up the volume with some Eminem or Daft Punk — you didn’t think I was that hip, did you? — and going to town on the treadmill, music also helps by:

*help you find self awareness (thinking about who you want to be, gaining a quick escape from reality)

*change your mood

*ease anxiety, soothe pain and reduce stress

*improve memory, concentration

*medical/mental benefits like boosting heart health, improving back pain, stroke recovery and dyslexia

I could find a ton more benefits for music, but for now I will simply say that music soothes the soul. There are apps and radio stations out there — beyond BSR — that cover a variety of genres and even standard radio stations. Whatever gets you in your groove for the day, utilize it.

Below is a list of 10 fantastic websites/music apps to help you find your better YOU.

*Brain Shift Radio — www.brainshiftradio.com

*Pandora Radio — www.pandora.com

*ITunes Radio — www.itunes.apple.com/us/radio

*Google Play Music — www.google.com/music

*iHeartRadio — www.iheart.com

*Slacker Radio — www.slacker.com

*Songza — www.sonza.com

*Spotify — www.spotify.com

*TuneIn Radio — www.tunein.com

*Rhapsody — www.rhapsody.com

Benefits of HIIT Training

Benefits of HIIT Training

IMG_6549IMG_6570 That one time, I did a figure competition, I realized benefits of HIIT Training created huge results..  Serious athletes have long known about the benefits of high intensity interval training (HIIT)—alternating periods of short, intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods—and they’ve been reaping the rewards, too.

The idea is simple: less total time required to make a big change—more bang for your buck!

Benefits of HIIT Training

Slow & steady, as marathon runners like to go, is a far extreme of high intensity interval training.  Here are a few other benefits from HIIT training.

1. Increases Your Metabolism
Combing high intensity with interval training results in EPOC, which speeds your metabolic rate and “translates into a metabolism boost for up to 48 hours after a complete HIIT routine,” says Salvador. This means you’ll still be burning fat even after you’ve left the gym.

2. Quick and Convenient
Long gone are the days of not having enough time for exercise. HIIT workouts is can be done anywhere: at home, in a hotel room, in a park, at a gym, etc. And most are 30 minutes or less! Who can’t spare that?

3. No Equipment Necessary
No dumbbells? No problem! HIIT workouts generally use only your body weight, since the focus is on getting your heart rate up and keeping it there. These workouts result in “optimal muscle building and muscle retention couples with fat loss and increased calorie burn,” says Salvador.
